Esteban Patiño
Esteban Patiño delves into the exploration of language creation and perception in his work. Employing a diverse range of artistic mediums, including sculpture, collage, and painting, he scrutinizes the intricate dynamics of transmitting, receiving, and generating arbitrary forms and semiotics within his artistic realm. To delve into these inquiries, Patiño devised a unique system of symbols characterized by six rotating characters, each revolving on its own axis four times, resulting in a total of 24 characters. This alphabet of shapes, creating the illusion of language, serves as a foundation for his artistic endeavors. Utilizing these symbolic constructs, which mimic language,
Patiño engages in the manipulation of word structures. He crafts text-based pieces such as speech bubbles, palindromes, and metaphors, offering visual representations of how written and visual language is comprehended. Aesthetically, each facet of Patiño's language study manifests as a distinctive iteration. His sculptures, characterized by repetitive systems, aspire to symbolically approximate temporality and the potential for universal shapes. Meanwhile, his collages take the form of humanoid bricolages, morphing into inquisitive monsters that reflect the complexities of time and human existence. In contrast, his paintings adopt deeply intuitive forms that materialize on canvas, occasionally giving rise to mythical beings or entities.
These works seek to breathe life into representations of timeless activities and interactions. Despite their inherent distinctions, Patiño's artistic styles harmoniously converge, forming a cohesive praxis. This synergy prompts him to continually reconsider the multifaceted nature of words as symbols, each possessing infinite and idiosyncratic interpretations. Simultaneously, his work reflects on the enduring impact of the human mark within the landscape of our collective understanding.
